Whether it is the first time you are seeking therapy or if you are returning to therapy, the process of finding a therapist can be daunting. I believe it is essential to find a therapist that feels right, someone who can understand you.
I attempt to meet individuals where they are at, assisting each to examine their particular issues in a warm environment that fosters growth through exploration. My approach is psychodynamic; I work collaboratively with individuals in illuminating new strategies for creating positive change.
I hold a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work (MSW) from the University of Chicago and have experience working as a therapist in hospitals, schools, community mental health centers, and residential treatment facilities. I have over ten years of experience working with families, couples, adolescents, and adults coping with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, loss, substance abuse, eating disorders, phobias and relationship difficulties. I provide culturally appropriate services and practice in a way that is LGBTQ affirming. I am a Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA) in the state of Oregon and I am in the process of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
I am committed to providing effective, affordable therapy; I have a flexible rate and provide a free 30 minute consultation to discuss the best way to meet your needs. I look forward to hearing from you.

There comes a time for many of us when parts of our life stop working as well as they once did. Sometimes this happens suddenly through loss of a loved one, our job, our marriage, or some other traumatic event. For others of us, the natural transition into our forties, fifties, and sixties can be stressful and frightening. These events can impact relationships and threaten to ruin marriages or partnerships.
Some people have felt “different” from other people for as long back as they can remember. These people can develop many coping skills to hide their differences. They may be disorganized, forgetful, have trouble in school, social situations, working environments, and with relationships -- they may have received one of several labels as learning disabled. Regardless, there are strategies, insights, and skills I can offer to help.
There are many ways to come to a place of confusion, doubt, anger, depression, or anxiety about the future. Therapy can be a great comfort and help by providing a safe, confidential place to explore new ways to view others and our selves. My role is to assist individuals and couples to find new meaning and direction in turbulent times.
After several decades of working in the corporate world, I returned to my love of psychology. I earned a BA in Sociology from the University of Texas in 1970. At the age of 56, I returned to school for a Masters in Counseling Psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. I have been seeing clients since 2004 at the Portland YWCA Counseling Center. In 2009, I decided to start a private practice. Doing this work is privilege and sacred path for me.
My standard price is $40 for a fifty-minute session. I offer a sliding scale for those who cannot afford the standard price. Please contact me for a brief initial consultation at no cost.

- Are you depressed or anxious?
- Do you struggle with problem thought or behavior patterns?
- Are you troubled by memories of childhood neglect or other trauma?
- Do you feel shame or regret about how you eat or about your body?
- Are there challenges or questions in your relationships?
I have helped empower many clients to explore and come to terms with issues like these.
My years of education, training and work in this field have given me a detailed perspective about some of the concerns that trouble people – as well as the underlying challenges and complicated feelings that come up when dealing with them.
My broad, integrative background helps me work sensitively and effectively with clients to meet their individual goals in therapy and emphasizes mindfulness and insight. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I practice within the profession's highest ethical standards, which includes respect for diversity.
My standardized fee is $95 for a fifty-minute session. I will work with clients to set a modified rate that reflects their ability to pay for therapy, especially if they are uninsured or prefer not to use insurance. Shorter or longer meetings can be arranged on a pro-rated basis. Sessions over the telephone are also available.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Mental distress often comes along when we attempt to grow, be different or to survive the changes that life brings our way. Even transitions that are welcomed can be stressful to the body and mind. If the struggle to manage change becomes difficult, many people face some form of depression or anxiety.
Therapy can provide relief from your symptoms, a reconnection with your self and will allow for a firmer basis for moving ahead in your life.
My emphasis is one of integration. My goal is to work collaboratively with my clients to integrate their internal experiences (and feelings) with their external reality (and relationships). I believe that successful living entails being able to balance, integrate, and thrive in both spheres in one’s life. My specialties include:
Anxiety and Depression
Relationship problems (repairing and strengthening relationships, identifying and changing recurrent relational patterns that cause problems in one’s living practice)
Life Transitions (e.g., leaving home, separation or divorce, parenting challenges, bereavement, career change, retirement, coping with chronic illness)
Self-Esteem
Stress Management
“Phase of Life Issues” (helping teens and adults with friendship issues and individualization issues)
My clinical training and expertise includes therapeutic work with children, adolescents, adult individuals, family and group therapy. I use a variety of empirically supported approaches and techniques to help guide our work together. I hold a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the Fielding Graduate University and have worked in both private practice and community mental health agencies.
My standard fee is $75.00 per 50-minute individual or family session. I offer a free 30-minute consultation and generous sliding-scale fees may be available.

My Philosophy ~ The most essential ingredient to successful counseling is not so much the tools and interventions, but the relationship between the therapist and client. A relationship based on trust is critical. Therefore from the first therapy session onwards I work with the client to build a safe and supportive environment in which to explore the client's issues. I approach each person as unique and valuable in themselves. I allow the client to enter the counseling relationship in their own way and on their own terms. I also encourage the client to help define the nature of their process, which allows us to identify and use the tools most needed to progress towards the goals they've set for therapy.
I bring a Jungian perspective and a holistic approach. I know that body, mind, behavior and psyche must be addressed in any change process. My perspective allows me to not just work with the symptom, but to look deeply into the psyche to the underlying causes of current challenges and work at the source for permanent and deep change.
My Experience ~ I have twenty plus years providing counseling services in the Portland community. I have worked extensively with adolescents, children and their families. Much of this work has focused on children in foster families, adoptive families and blended families. This work addresses the developmental and transitional challenges the family faces, and the impact of trauma and loss in the family system. My expertise includes working with individuals, addressing substance abuse and other addictive behaviors which impede living life fully. Again, trauma and loss are often present in the addictive process and must be addressed for healing to occur.
I have enjoyed work with women facing the unique challenges associated with our gender. Women's groups have been a big part of my experience. I also welcome and work with men. I particularly enjoy working with people of color as I have been active in the black community for 20 years and know many of the unique challenges faced regarding race and culture in our society. I am very interested in cross cultural marriages and the unique challenges and rewards such relationships bring. I welcome Gays and Lesbians who bring their own unique perspectives and experiences. I work with small children utilizing play and sand tray therapies to help resolve issues of trauma or work through major life changes which can be overwhelming to the very young. In these situations, it is important to have time with the parents as well to insure they are part of the child's supportive healing process.
Why do Therapy? ~ A person who comes to me for counseling is likely to desire more self awareness in order to make more conscious choices and learn to live more fully in their relationships and their lives. There may be a presenting problem or situation that needs to be addressed, a life transition that is challenging, or even a simple desire to grow and live more fully.
Yes, seeking help and support can be frightening, but a caring and skilled therapist can make an incredible difference in feeling safe and being able to move forward in a positive manner. Life can become fuller and richer despite the many challenges along the way.
Approaches:
~ Jungian to work deep within the psyche with the core self
~ Cognitive behavioral to address thoughts and actions
~ Body Orientated to comfort the body and experience deeper vitality
~ Relaxation and visualization techniques
~ Family systems to work within the context of the family unit
~ Life Coaching through new challenges and transitions
~ Parenting Skills to improve effectiveness and understanding
~ Expressive therapies to allow emotions to enter the process
~ Sand Tray and Play Therapy to bring playfulness and metaphor into healing

Do you sometimes feel really stuck in life? Would talking to someone objective help you get some clarity about your life's issues? My clients say... "I feel better after talking to you," "You made me laugh and that felt good," "My problems don't seem so troublesome now."
Some of the benefits of seeing a therapist or coach include: Feeling connected and supported in problem solving and decision making, improved self-esteem, and developing more resiliency. Having another point of view - one that is non-judgmental and accepting -- can facilitate change allowing one to become unstuck.
As a mature therapist I see the whole picture. You are unique in your own experience of life. Addressing the core issues of your life can be empowering in a safe space.
I completed my master's degree at the College of Norte Dame, and I've had substantial experience and success working with clients with addictions, family issues, low mood, worry, adjustment problems and more.
And, sometimes words are not enough to get to the core of what is happening. I am skilled at facilitating various modalities of art therapy, play therapy and sand tray therapy. We use mixed media to address and explore various parts of yourself that otherwise may be undiscovered.
