Lynne Joy Nesbit, founder and director of Wise Counsel & Comfort, offers skilled, compassionate therapy for adults, and couples...
..... "It is my privilege to work as a counselor and therapist, to be trusted with the most personal of your concerns as you explore and examine whatever it is that stands in the way of having the life you desire.”
My Therapy Style – Truth-Telling & Integrity
My style is best described as forthright, grounded, honest and open.
Therapy with me is often challenging, frequently lighthearted, and always supportive.
One thing clients will tell you is that I’m a stickler for truth-telling. I try to be watchful, helping clients recognize when they’re holding themselves (or me) at arm’s length from the truth. We learn subtle dishonesty in our culture. We’re angry and we say “nothing’s wrong.” We’re hurt and we say “It’s OK, really.” We’re too depressed to come to work and we call in sick. We rage at our partners that they don't understand us, but rarely are we courageous enough to speak the simple truth… yet we yearn to be understood.
When we’re not grounded in truth, we settle for less… less integrity, less authenticity, less intimacy, less life. I work to help my clients become more familiar, and more comfortable with the experience of living and speaking the truth.
Relationship Therapy: Couples & Partners
Whether you're dealing with the very hardest issues -- deciding whether to separate or divorce -- or trying your best to find your way towards reconciliation, couple's counseling can be a much needed support and resource. And if your relationship therapy goals are happy ones? Are you experiencing the dizzying exhilaration of beginning a new relationship, laying a foundation for a solid, trusting partnership, coming to clear agreements and relationship goals, building intimacy or preparing for marriage? I'd be delighted to support you in that endeavor as well.
I am very comfortable helping couples speak frankly and openly about issues of sexuality and finances, and have substantial experience helping partners face challenging issues of infidelity and addictions. My work is grounded in helping each partner speak and hear the truth, understand one another, and bring compassion and even humor to your communication. I draw from the research and methods of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, as well as Harville Hendrix who have done exhaustive research on what makes for long-term contentment and satisfaction in relationships, and what behaviors and attitudes will almost inevitably lead to a relationship ending in pain.
The goal of our work together may be reconcilation, but not always. In some relationships, the task is really to bring the relationship to an end with the least harm to all parties, and I feel privileged to assist in that process as well.
Education, Experience & Training
I have been a professional counselor in both private practice and at Providence Portland Medical Center for seventeen years.
My master’s degree in Counseling was awarded with honors from Portland State University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (State of Oregon, OBLPCT C2242), I hold national certification through the National Board of Certified Counselors, membership in the American Counseling Association, the Oregon Counseling Association and the Women’s Therapy Project Northwest, and I abide by the highest ethical standards of my profession. I complete more than 60 hours of continuing professional education each year. In recent years I have completed: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder training with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, couple’s therapy training with Drs. John and Julie Gottman, cognitive behavioral therapy with Dr. Judith Beck, Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy through the Wellness Institute, and intensive hypnotherapy training with Dr. Emmett Miller.
Spirituality
I have deep respect for my clients’ spiritual paths and find that it is often fundamental to the process of growth and healing. There’s ample scientific evidence of the positive impact of meditation and other spiritual practices on our physical being ~ how could it not have an influence on our thoughts, emotions and behaviors?
Guided Visualization
Though some think of alternative therapies as unproven, when they are provided by well trained professionals, they can be very helpful. These techniques are firmly grounded in decades of research. In guided visualization, you can experience deep relaxation during which your critical mind can rest while your inner wisdom, your conscious and subconscious mind can bring about changes you desire.
Fee Policy
I offer initial consults at no cost, and I offer discounted fees to those for whom therapy would otherwise be unaffordable. My fee is $110 per 50 minute hour. I am not affiliated with insurance companies, though I am glad to provide documentation so you can seek reimbursement for fees. I also accept debit and credit cards.
Confidentiality
Therapy can only be effective with the assurance of privacy. All records of our work together are held in the strictest confidence. There are certain important exceptions to confidentiality that we will discuss at our first appointment.
In closing. . .
I’m guessing that if you’ve read this far, you’re on a diligent search for just the right therapist. If you have a hunch that might be me, please give me a call in Portland at 503-282-0182, or e-mail me at: lynnejoy@gmail.com.
All the best,
Lynne Joy

Are you stuck? Are you feeling frustrated with the direction of your life? What do you want?
Part of my work with anyone whether it is an adult, a teenager, or a business is to find out what that person really wants in their life. It’s my job to help lead you to a place of understanding, awareness, and acceptance so you can really get what you want!
I have a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Purdue University and over 13 years experience working with adolescents, adults, and families in finding their way to better communication and improving relationship, decreasing feelings of sadness, loss, anger and worry, as well as gaining improvement in physical, mental, and emotional well being.
I have a straight-forward, direct approach and utilize a cognitive behavioral theoretical model with large doses of humor, empathy, safety, and compassion. I believe that once we feel safe sharing our thoughts and feelings we can change our behavioral patterns through hard work, introspection and insight.
I believe that therapy should be available to anyone that wants it no matter their income or insurance. My fees are $70/hour, however, I offer a sliding fee scale to all clients and our first 50minute consultation is free. At this time, I do not accept insurance, however I may be able to meet your “co-pay” fee!

"Compassion, Release, Clarity & Healing"
I will walk along side of you as you look back on the pain in your past, without judgment, shame, or degradation. With compassion I will help you find yourself and explore how the issues of the past affect your present life. I believe we all need a safe place to release the memories of our past, separate from loved ones who seem to always have an opinion about what is best for our life. I will give you time to find what you feel is best for your life. I will provide you with that place and give you the clarity to look at the choices you have made, the influences on your life, and the path you must walk to find yourself. I will help you find firm emotional ground to stand on while you begin the healing process.
My approach to therapy is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral, Jungian, and narrative principles. I believe that you have a story to tell, and it is your perspective and expression of your story that is important. The center of our focus is on the issues you want to address and explore. You have all the resources within yourself that are necessary for change. I can help you become aware of these resources through the therapeutic relationship. I am particularly interested in helping you become aware of core beliefs that have either stifled or enhanced your life story, and how these core beliefs influence the decisions and choices that you make. It's time to take the pen from others, place it in your hand, and write a life script that you can feel good about, and rest your head at night knowing you are true to your self.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, completed a Master of Arts in Counseling at George Fox University, and have more than 4000 hours of face-to-face counseling with families, individuals, and couples. In my personal life, I had a loved one with a mental illness who committed suicide. This gave me the desire within to counsel and support those who struggle with these issues in their life, or have a loved one with a mental illness. Also, after providing services to over 200 families, I have counseled and mentored many adolescents to become who they are meant to be. I have helped them face peer pressure, and build their self-esteem to withstand some of the pressures of adolescence. I have had an article published in Parenting Today's Teen, about my experience working with adolescents.
In order to start the process, the first session is free so we can make sure that we are a good fit. If not, there are several other counselors with Wise Counsel and Comfort I will be pleased to refer you to.

Humanistic Style / Spirituality / Desensitization Training / Chemical Dependency
I have experience working with depression, anxiety, conflict, and addictions. I offer conflict resolution, traditional talk therapy, substance abuse assessments and therapy, desensitization training, and Reiki energy work -- all in service to your personal growth and help you overcome difficulties.
My style is client centered, relationally based and humanistic. Therapy with me is often spirited and marked by humor, frequently challenging, (but always supportive) and can be life changing. In therapy you will move toward introspection and self-analysis, and with my feedback, find the answers to your questions. You will explore and experience yourself in an honest way that will bring clearer realization for the possible need for changes in your life and help strengthen your desire and determination to begin to take action.
I received my Master of Social Work from Wayne State University at Detroit, Michigan. My BS in Social Work was awarded, Summa Cum Laude by Eastern Michigan University. I am a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) Level III in the state of Oregon. I am an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in the state of Oregon. I am a certified Reiki Master with over 12 years of experience in energy work. While doing graduate work, I learned Desensitization Training through classes in Cognitive/Behavioral Interventions at Wayne State University. The Association of Humanistic Psychology (AHP, both nationally and locally) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) bespeak my membership.
My initial consultation (30 minutes) is usually free. If it seems a good therapeutic "fit," we will talk about the direction and length of your therapy. My standard fee is $90 per 50-minute session and I offer a sliding scale based on family income. Payment is made by cash or check at each appointment. Other than illness or accident, if you do not show up for an appointment, or if you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, I ask that you honor the payment obligation for the session. It may be possible to receive payment from a third party or for you to be reimbursed by a third party for your sessions.
I am a member of the Regence Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Oregon, Lifewise, and Aetna provider panels and I am able to work with clients on Medicare. I can bill some other insurances "out-of-network." I'm also able to provide clinical supervision for both counseling and social work interns in Oregon.

In my experience, therapy is a unique and dynamic process that involves both subtle shifts and meaningful changes. My approach to therapy combines warmth, humor and creativity and is very collaborative. I provide therapy for people interested in depth work and "fine tuning" as well as those in immediate crisis. I work with individuals from a perspective that helps them to feel encouraged, valued and productive in their lives. Goal setting can be very useful to move the therapy forward and alter patterns of thought and behavior that are interfering with the life that you want for yourself. Depending on your preferences and needs, you and I may decide to work together briefly to manage a current challenge or longer-term to resolve more persistent, chronic difficulties and achieve lasting results.
Some of my specialties are grief and loss, sexual abuse/trauma, depression and relational issues. When working with couples, I focus on identifying positive qualities and strengths in the relationship, as well as teaching simple and effective communication techniques. In addition to my private practice, I also provide therapy for children, adolescents and families in a school setting.
I received my B.A. from UCLA and my Master of Arts in Psychology from Phillips Graduate Institute in Encino, CA. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I continue my professional education through seminars and workshops so that I can better serve my clients.
My standard fees are $75/Individuals & Couples and $90/Families. Sliding scale fees can be arranged in cases of financial stress and I offer a no cost, thirty-minute initial consultation to see if we are a good therapeutic fit. If not, I would be happy to refer you to one of my many trusted colleagues. At this time I do not accept insurance, and payment can be made in cash or check at the end of each session.

I truly believe we all have the ability to heal ourselves. My approach to therapy, following this truth, is to help guide you to your own sense of self-empowerment. The more empowered one becomes in their own self-worth and their own values, the more one is able to believe that they actually do have control of their own lives, their circumstances, their emotions and thoughts, their very reason for seeking therapy. I, myself, have personally walked this path towards self-acceptance and forgiveness through love, which is the gateway towards healing. I encourage and challenge you for a moment to consider the reality that you actually have choices, choices that may lead you further into despair and/or choices that may lead you further to discover more happiness in your life. We do in fact create our own reality. My approach is client-centered, focusing on you and your current situation. I have over 10 years of mental health experience working with clients of all ages. I offer family, individual, couples and group counseling.
I received my Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from the Center for Humanistic Studies in Detroit, Michigan, 1998, and my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Michigan State University, 1995. I believe the source of any discontent is rooted in the reality of one not actualizing their own true potential. I feel passionate towards helping others realize their dream. It is a tough world to live in right now. Even the simple energetics of leaving ones own home can create stress, which adds to the burdens we already carry. Awareness is the pathway to protection from unwanted influences, including others. If you are feeling incredibly stressed, depressed, anxious, can't seem to figure out what to do with your life or the ones you love, give me a call. I also have thorough experience in working with at-risk youth, adolescents who really need someone to talk to.
I offer a sliding scale making therapy affordable for you. Initial consultation is free. I am in the process of accepting certain insurance plans, so please mention your insurance carrier. Reiki is also available. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

My areas of treatment expertise are:
- Anxiety
- Trauma
- Family & Relationship Dynamics
- Major Life Transitions
- Addiction
- Personality Disorders
- Anger Management
- Working With Family Members Of Individuals With Severe Mental Illness
I have received additional, specialized training in several areas which have proved helpful for my clients. These include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Individual Psychology, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. My professional style is one which incorporates techniques from all of these practices working in conjunction with every client’s unique personality and set of concerns. I also embrace feedback and strongly promote outcomes-informed care which is marked by a consistent measurement of how well your treatment is working for you.
My standard fee for each fifty minute session is $75, and sliding scale rates are available in certain situations. I also offer a free thirty minute consultation upon request. What do these conditions all have in common?
Fibromyalgia ~ Insomnia ~ Chronic Fatigue ~ Chronic Pain ~ Leaky Gut ~ Diabetes
Hypertension ~ Weight Gain ~ Food Allergies ~ Stress Overload ~ Hormone Imbalance
All of these conditions are caused by or contributed to by blood sugar imbalance and adrenal deregulation.
What are the possible long-term consequences when these conditions are not resolved?
Cancer ~ Stroke ~ Alzheimer’s Disease ~ Heart Disease
Conditions like fibromyalgia, insomnia, and the others listed above are really symptoms. They are your body’s messages about underlying imbalances. Blood sugar imbalance is epidemic in our society, a society in which children develop “adult onset diabetes.” Blood sugar imbalance leads to adrenal stress and disorder. These conditions are common and taking pills only shoots the messenger. There is a better way.
As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) my goals are to analyze your current diet for strengths and weaknesses and teach you how you can support your health goals through diet and nutrition.
With my training in Counseling Psychology my goals are to help you create a plan to achieve your unique health goals, and help you build your confidence and abilities to reach those goals.
With my training and certification in functional endocrinology my goals are to use non-invasive lab tests to measure your baseline adrenal function and to suggest supplements, lifestyle, and nutrition changes to correct imbalances.
In today’s society your health starts with you. Knowledge is power. I can be a member of your team to support your healthy present and future.
My passion is to help my clients to help themselves. In the 80’s and 90’s I studied and diagnosed heart disease as a registered ultrasound tech. In 1999 I received my Masters in Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and I helped people who were looking for an alternative. Because I wanted to teach my clients and be a partner in their health rather than their “doctor” I studied counseling, graduating with an MA from Lewis & Clark in 2007. I earned my certification as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner from the Nutritional Therapy Association
Call me at 503-334-5106 or email me at jinshinney2@msn.com. I offer free consultation and I welcome your questions, so your contact is risk-free.
My office hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 3 PM with weekend hours available on Sundays from 10 AM to 3 PM.
My fees are in a sliding scale from $40 to $80 per session. Supplement costs and lab costs are additional.

I have personally experienced the pain as well as the rich lessons that come from working through each of these life situations. I believe that every person has the strength to move through life’s challenges. Sometimes we may not have the necessary skills to do so, but we can learn and practice them during the journey towards health and balance. My role as a counselor is to listen to, observe, suggest, teach, challenge and encourage clients in their journeys through the rough spots.
I use a combination of therapy techniques from cognitive-emotional, family systems, Gestalt and humanistic theories. When working with a client, I consider all aspects of that person’s life - family, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, relationships, profession, health, and activities. I pay attention to what is said in the moment – verbally and physically – and encourage my clients to also be aware. I am honest, respectful and mindful of the vulnerability of clients who trust me with their life difficulties.
I have experience working with adults, couples, families, children, and adolescents in a variety of settings, including therapeutic settings, schools, and juvenile court. My clients have had a variety of issues, including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, abuse, grief and loss, abandonment, suicide bereavement, loss of parent (by death or dementia), divorce, parenting/step-parenting, delinquency, substance abuse, and foster care.

Often in our lives, we face adversity in approaching life's challenges. Many times we are able to navigate these struggles on our own or with the help of loved ones. However, occasionally our old ways of coping don't seem to work anymore and we hit a roadblock. Despite our best efforts to solve these troubles we end up feeling stuck and alone. It can be frustrating and draining to try and find the solution we are seeking without an outside perspective. Although the process of finding a therapist may be difficult, developing a therapeutic relationship can be healing in itself. It can also provide a platform in which to discuss difficult topics and to explore the options we have available.
I believe counseling involves helping people work through challenging experiences and is also important in facilitating a healthy, self-sustaining outlook on life. I encourage my clients to take a proactive approach in fostering a lifestyle that promotes mental health and continued development throughout their lives. I am flexible in my approach and work to create a warm, comfortable environment to discuss your concerns.
I highly value Mindfulness based approaches which help create a state of balance and heighten awareness in regard to the many ways ruminating and worrying can affect our lives in the present moment. I strive to help clients look at current life difficulties in a nonjudgmental manner to not only help with current stressors but to be able to actively engage future difficulties more openly.
I also have an extensive knowledge base in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). My experience in practicing CBT and DBT has taken place in multiple community mental health settings which has been augmented by professional trainings I have participated in throughout my years of practice.
I have over 5 years of experience working with teenagers, adults, couples and families dealing with multiple issues. I have helped people to improve relationships and increase their overall sense of well being in addition to providing strategies aimed at decreasing symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, grief/loss and substance abuse. I feel comfortable working with a variety of concerns and will work with you to develop a personalized plan to meet your goals. I am LGBTQI affirming and value the diverse backgrounds of my clients. Multicultural sensitivity is very important to me. I strive to incorporate this sensitivity into my work as much as possible in order to understand my clients in the context of the culture in which they were raised.

Are you going through big changes in your life? Career change? Kids grown? Family situation changing? Perhaps returning to school? Want to retire, but don't know how?
I provide brief, focused and affordable coaching for adults going through life transitions, particularly transitions related to education and career.
Coaching is not therapy! Instead, I will ask questions, share with you new research and teach you planning skills, help you make decisions and then take action on implementing your plan to achieve your personal and career goals. We will also make sure you have follow up resources so you leave with a strong network of support. Coaching is an exciting process of empowerment, choice, and progress towards real life goals!
I have 15 years experience as an educator and college coach with adults returning to school in community college and university settings. With a Master of Social Work degree, and extensive experience working with diverse communities, I am well equipped to help a broad range of adults achieve their academic, career and personal goals.
I'm also a "recovering attorney!" With over 10 years experience in the law, I bring a logical approach to coaching and can help you locate the "big picture" of your life among the details. If you are affected by legal matters, I can help point you in the right direction so you are asking the right questions and finding the advocacy resources you need. (Note: I am no longer a member of the bar and cannot provide legal advice.)
Prefer to work individually? I offer sessions at $40 per hour with some sliding scale options available as well. You may also benefit from a group setting, as adults often thrive in groups as they learn from each other and move from isolation to a sense of community. I recommend my groups and workshops, especially if you are strapped financially, as I offer these series for only $10 per session. Before a first appointment, I’m happy to offer a brief telephone consultation to determine whether coaching, and my services, are a good fit for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon! I look forward to hearing from you!

It is an honor and a privilege to join with people as they journey toward more joyful lives
and satisfying relationships with loved ones. There's nothing more gratifying to me than
creating a counseling atmosphere that is safe, welcoming and supportive for my clients,
whether they're children, adolescents or adults.
When I'm working with children and teens, my intention is to help your kids thrive, no
matter what the barriers might be. If your child isn't doing well, it's our job to figure out
why, and to explore strategies and solutions that will help. With adults ~ whether you're
having difficulty with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, loss, illness or just difficult
transitions ~ I'll work closely with you using approaches that we create together, to best
meet your needs.
While not all these interventions are of interest to every client, I have specialized
training and experience in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy, Panic Control Treatment for Adolescents, Solution-Focused
Therapy, Play and Sand Tray Therapy, Incredible Years Parenting Program, Motivational
Interviewing and Family Therapy. I've had substantial experience working with the most
difficult of issues, including trauma and abuse. I'm also a certified "Yoga Calm for
Children" teacher ~ a practice that many find extraordinarily valuable.
I invite you to learn more about my practice by visiting my website, and I'd be glad to
talk with you about setting an initial free 30 minute consultation appointment to discuss
your needs. My fee is $90 per session, and I do accept credit/debit card payments. I
also offer sliding scale options for those suffering financial hardship. If you are covered
by insurance, check with me to see if I am on your panel, or I'll be glad to provide
documentation of services and payment should you choose to seek reimbursement
from your insurance company.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Be Who You Are . . . Love Who You are.
The focus of my work is to provide an open, understanding environment for each person's unique
experience of being. I enjoy working with anyone who is interested in a deepening understanding of the
creative spark of individuality that makes you you. There is often pain that comes with living life on your
own terms and I am here to support you. Together we will create and explore your goals of embodying
your unique self while healing feelings of shame, anxiety, and frustration. I specialize in working with
LGBT clients and adults with ADHD, however, I am available for anyone who feels they can benefit from
working with me.
LGBT Affirmative Approach
Growing up LGBT in our society can have a traumatic effect. LGBT affirmative psychotherapy works to
heal the wounds of internalized homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia that can be an underlying cause
of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, unsafe sex, and other difficult challenges faced by many LGBT
individuals.
Adults with ADHD
Buried in clutter? Lost your keys (again)? Tired of being perpetually late? ADHD is not just for kids.
The impairments associated with this disorder can create serious obstacles for adults. Together we will
explore the many facets of the disorder. I will provide you with tools to make behavioral changes and
help you heal the toxic shame that often comes with growing up with ADHD.
I hold a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in LGBT Affirmative Therapy from
Antioch University Los Angeles. My work in the mental health field began at one of the largest LGBT
organizations in the world, the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. Chosen as one of only ten new
interns in their nationally acclaimed LGBT specific psychotherapy internship program, I received excellent
training in a range of mental health issues including domestic partner violence, substance abuse, and
crisis intervention. I have worked with both individuals and couples, from adolescents to seniors, on a
number of issues including depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, childhood sexual abuse, issues
of aging, sexual and gender identity issues.
My standard rate is $80 per 50 minute session. Sliding-scale options are available for those in financial need. I do not accept insurance, however, I do accept payment by cash, check or credit card.
