My direct, down-to-earth therapy style works well for those who may have been hesitant to seek counseling in the past. I work hard to dispel some common myths held by young people and people of color that…

“Only crazy people go to a therapist.”
“Going to a therapist means you are not right.”
“It doesn't make any sense to tell a stranger all your business.”
“I can handle things myself”

My undergraduate studies were at Spelman College and I was awarded my Master’s degree in Social Work from Portland State University. Over the years, I’ve had substantial experience working with adolescents, young adults and people of color, and I’ve developed a specializations in mixed ethnicity, identity, adjustment, eating and body image issues, relationship issues, trauma and abuse. I’ve worked in a variety of settings with teen parents, adolescents, medically fragile children dealing with ethnic identity issues, adoption, depression, child abuse counseling and prevention, and eating disorders. I welcome children, teens, individual adults, couples and families to my practice.

The quality of the relationship between counselor and client is central to making progress in therapy, so I offer a complementary initial consultation to be certain that the match is a good one. My hope is that if I am not the person to work with, I can still help you find the right place to go, or the right counselor to meet your needs.

If we do decide to continue, my fees are $90 for a 50 minute session and I offer a sliding fee scale to prevent finances from being a barrier to treatment. I do require payment of cash or check at the time of service.

Call me at 503-975-7499 or send me an email to schedule a first appointment.

Life brings with it many challenges and opportunities that are at times difficult to resolve alone. As your counselor I seek to provide a safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where we can work together to gain insight into your current struggles, determine your goals, and establish how best to create the more fulfilling life that you desire. As we explore your current issues we will look at how past events have shaped your self-perception, affecting current relationships and your ability to cope with present challenges. I'm confident that all of us have the ability to change as I have experienced the results both personally and with my clients. My special interests include grief and loss, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, and issues within relationships.

I believe the therapeutic process is a collaborative journey shared between client and counselor. My counseling style is individualized to each person I work with, as all of us are unique individuals with our own special way of viewing life. “One size does not fit all.” I use an integrated approach utilizing techniques from various counseling philosophies to provide an environment where you can learn to recognize self-defeating patterns, find meaning and purpose, and feel encouraged and empowered to make new choices. I believe that having a counseling relationship where you feel accepted and safe provides you the opportunity to thrive and grow.

I earned my Masters of Counseling in Marital, Couple, and Family counseling from Idaho State University and I am a Nationally Certified Counselor. I continue to learn all that I can about helping others by attending workshops and seminars, and by consulting with fellow counselors. I have years of training and experiences that have helped me to have insight, empathy, and compassion for all that I work with.

My fee is $60 for a fifty-minute session, and sliding scale fees may be available for those who cannot afford the standard fee. Payment in the form of check or cash is accepted at the time services are provided. I look forward to meeting you and would be honored to share in your life’s journey. Please contact me for a free thirty-minute consultation appointment.

Therapy for a Better Life

Are you looking for balance in your life? Are you having a difficult time with your child or partner? Do you feel stuck?

Sometimes a counselor can help you find your way. I am a marriage and family therapist who can help you get back into your groove.

Everyone has strengths, but we occasionally fall into patterns that prevent us from seeing solutions to life's pressures. You may have used strategies that worked in past relationships but no longer serve you. I can help you discover what?s working and what?s not. You can feel better.

Areas of Specialization:

~ Marriage and relationship conflicts
~ Pre-marital counseling
~ Grief and loss
~ Life transitions
~ Postpartum issues
~ Parenting issues and challenges
~ Effects of alcoholism on the family, including adult children of alcoholics
~ Family of origin issues
~ Communication difficulties
~ Stress management and coping skills
~ Relaxation techniques for improved health and well being

I believe that all people strive toward health but past interactions can impede progress. I work to uncover core motivations and look at the influence of client's relationships. While I come from a family systems perspective, I am client oriented, which means that you're in control. It is important that we address what is of most concern to you in each session. I often ask my clients "How is your approach working in your life?" I ask the same question regarding therapy. "Are you satisfied with the work we're doing? How do you feel about our relationship?" Research shows that 87% of change can be attributed to the alliance between client and therapist. For this reason it is imperative we work together in therapy.

My practice consists of working with couples, families and individuals who want to make change in their lives. As your therapist, I help clarify problems, identify needs and provide direction toward solutions that will improve your quality of life.

I customarily charge $60 dollars for a fifty minute session, and have a very flexible sliding scale. Give me a call to schedule a free 30 minute consultation.

What should you expect from psychotherapy with me?

You should expect to feel respected, listened to, and able to make yourself understood in the therapy relationship. While it may take time to get to know me and vice versa, the work of therapy is too hard to saddle with an incompatible working relationship. A feeling of trust should develop over time. A climate of honesty and truthfulness is needed where you can risk bringing up sensitive subjects without the fear of judgment. It is my job is to help you face the issues that brought you to therapy in a direct but compassionate a way. Depending upon the issue, you should have the sense of making identifiable progress towards your goal. Always feel free to let me know how you feel about the therapy.

If you know what you need, ask for it. You are not there for the benefit of the therapist, and a well-trained therapist should be able to appreciate your assertiveness. Usually long-standing and complicated issues take longer time to address than recent or less complicated issues, but know that your experience of growth and progress is what really matters.

I have expertise in treating a wide variety of mental health issues using a wide variety of techniques including clinical hypnosis, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Thought Field Therapy, Somatic Experiencing (SE,), Somatic Transformation, Sand Tray Therapy, Play Therapy, and Pet Therapy. My general practice focuses on personal growth issues, life change issues, mood disorders, grief and loss issues, and relationship issues, I have specialized over the years in treating trauma of various kinds including combat related trauma, childhood physical and sexual abuse, victims of crimes, acute loss, and trauma related to physical illness or accidents. Unlike many therapists, I have very extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of dissociative disorders. My medical background allows me to focus on optimal wellness for all clients, and an interest in persons with chronic medical conditions.

My therapeutic practice reflects my dual loves – psychology and education. The men and women I work with are generally good problem solvers but, due to the emotional nature of their issue(s), they need an empathic witness to their situation and work well in active collaboration toward achieving clarity and purpose again.

As a therapist I am honored to be a part of client’s journey toward integrity. Together we discover and clarify the individual’s core values and how they can be used more consistently to drive their choices and actions. A person’s drive toward a life of integrity is a courageous act that deserves non-judgmental support.

My psycho-educational style of counseling is practical, warm, humorous, informative, and always empathic. I hold degrees in psychology (BA) and counseling (MA) and I am a member of the National Association of Certified Counselors. I have worked with men and women seeking help with depression, anxiety, stress, grief & loss, career changes, job & school anxiety, improving relationships, and life planning. I offer a safe and structured environment where I challenge clients to explore ideas and options that will move them forward in this experiment we call adulthood.

I am also a member of the National Education Association. As an instructor I have taught classes and facilitated workshops in psychology, men and depression, human relations, parenting, career development, personality styles, parenting inter-cultural awareness, college success & survival skills, and goal setting.

I also offer Success Groups that meet once a week for 10 weeks. This is not a therapy group. It is a group where every member comes to declare their intention to succeed in achieving their stated purpose. Every member brings their idea, dream or goal - something they’ve always wanted to explore or accomplish. It is a place where one’s original plans can change and lead in new and exciting directions. It is a safe and respectful place to share successes and setbacks. It’s fun, challenging, and rewarding no matter which direction your original idea turns.

If you are interested in counseling or my next Success Group I encourage you to contact me at the phone number or the email listed above. I look forward to meeting you.
