My direct, down-to-earth therapy style works well for those who may have been hesitant to seek counseling in the past. I work hard to dispel some common myths held by young people and people of color ...

"Only crazy people go to a therapist."
"Going to a therapist means you are not right."
"It doesn't make any sense to tell a stranger all your business."
"I can handle things myself."

My undergraduate studies were at Spelman College and I was awarded my Master's degree in Social Work from Portland State University. Over the years, I've had substantial experience working with adolescents, young adults and people of color, and I've developed a specializations in mixed ethnicity, identity, adjustment, eating and body image issues, relationship issues, trauma and abuse. I've worked in a variety of settings with teen parents, adolescents, medically fragile children dealing with ethnic identity issues, adoption, depression, child abuse counseling and prevention, and eating disorders. I welcome children, teens, individual adults, couples and families to my practice.

The quality of the relationship between counselor and client is central to making progress in therapy, so I offer a complementary initial consultation to be certain that the match is a good one. My hope is that if I am not the person to work with, I can still help you find the right place to go, or the right counselor to meet your needs.

If we do decide to continue, my fees are $120 for a 50 minute session and I offer a sliding fee scale to prevent finances from being a barrier to treatment. I do require payment of cash or check at the time of service.

Call me at 503-975-7499 or send me an email to schedule a first appointment.

RECLAIMING WHOLENESS: One of my fundamental beliefs is that we are all multidimensional beings, built with the innate ability to heal, restore and regenerate physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually. My approach to healing is based on creating a strong therapeutic relationship as the foundation for identifying and building inner strength and resources, gently assisting you to recognize and release the blocks which disguise your real self and authenticity and serving as a catalyst for change and a support in times of challenge and stress. I focus on multidimensional, interactive, collaborative and educational interventions, blending traditional and emerging psychotherapy, counseling and life coaching modalities.

HEALING LIFE SKILLS: Learning and integrating new skills is key to making healthy lifestyle changes, enhancing your relationships ~ with yourself and others, and clearing and releasing inner and outer obstacles. In my role as nurse practitioner, therapist, counselor and coach, I will help you craft a plan and teach you the healing life skills you need to get and stay healthy on all levels – so that you can move forward and create change, success and fulfillment - for life.

BALANCING BRAIN CHEMISTRY: When brain chemistry is out of balance, life can really be a struggle - often despite working hard to achieve wellness and create changes that last. When imbalances in brain chemistry are limiting progress, then combining pharmaceuticals with coaching/psychotherapy, hypnosis and life skills training can be a very useful and effective approach to supporting you to achieve wellness in mind, body and spirit.

Most people have times in their life when a problem doesn't go away on its own, and they find it having a negative impact on their day-to-day life. Sometimes people turn to means of escaping or avoiding the problem, or sometimes the problem leads to a crisis. I believe that my mindfulness-based approach to counseling can help most people address and resolve their problems in life, hopefully before a crisis occurs.

As a result of my experience as counselor over the years, I have been inspired by the courage and dedication that my clients have demonstrated to confront their concerns and follow paths to make positive changes in their lives. It is my intention to use my experience, education, training and skills to help all clients find these paths toward improvement and decrease their suffering and cultivate feelings of being well.

I have been counseling since 2006. I am a Cognitive-Behavior (CBT) therapist with a special interest and expertise in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and substance-related concerns. I am also trained in dual diagnosis, trauma-informed care, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPSM). I strive to help people meet their goals by examining the connection between how they think, feel (emotionally and physically), behave, and interact with their surroundings; and by teaching the skills of mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. I provide individual counseling with adults ages 18 and up, and provide couples counseling as well. I am happy to provide a free phone consultation to see if my counseling strategies would be a good fit for any interested potential client. Please visit my website to obtain more information about beginning counseling with me and learn more about my background and qualifications.

Should we decide to move forward with counseling, our therapy together begins with a thorough assessment, including your reasons for seeking counseling and relevant history. During this process (which may take a few sessions), we will begin to develop our therapy relationship and discuss treatment options. We will work together to identify your strengths, define your struggles, and establish your goals. We will utilize proven therapies (e.g. CBT, DBT, MET) to treat your unique situation. In my experience, mindfulness skills and meditation practice or focused concentration skills facilitate therapy and are essential to recovering, discovering, and uncovering your optimal you. Thank you for reading and I wish you well. Keith

Philosophy and Approach: I believe that each person deserves to thrive and create the best life possible for them. I utilize a multifaceted approach that is tailored to the client depending on their presenting concerns, goals, needs, and strengths. Sessions are person centered and address treatment goals by applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Positive Psychology, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness techniques.

I specialize in gender and sexual minority support. I have experience with youth and adults in the LGBTQIAQ and Poly-Alt-Kink communities. I believe that individuals have the right to get support from someone that is familiar with the unique considerations of these communities. I also understand how membership in these communities is not one’s entire identity. As individuals all people face a complex range of ups and downs in life which may or may not be impacted by intersectional identities.

Fees: Group facilitation, individual counseling and partners counseling services are all offered at a standard rate of $40 per 50 minute session after an initial $75 fee for a 90 min intake session. I offer a sliding scale in situations of significant financial hardship so that finances are not a barrier to receiving support. I provide a quarterly support group for current clients at no fee.

Individuals (adults and youth) and families/partners bring their worries and frustrations to me when feeling trapped by old, outdated patterns. Sometimes the whole pattern is hard to see, and I am motivated to not only listen fully and ask some clarifying questions, but also to 'hold up the mirror' for your 'aha' moments!

When people feel overwhelmed (or hopeless, numb, or in extreme pain from old or new heart-wounds...) we lose some of our creativity and empathy, which are important treasures to bring to our relationships (including with our ourselves). We'll work together to shrink the overwhelm, then your strengths will guide us to solutions. We discover what starts to bring some relief and build from there. I'll bring gentle honesty, nonjudgment, and commitment, as well as over 10 years experience guiding people young and not-so-young toward a more balanced self and healthier relationships.

Looking at family-of-origin dynamics leads to curiosity about thoughts, feelings & actions & how they might all relate. This 'attachment & cognitive-behavioral' foundation proves helpful, whether people struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma history, stress from life's transitions, or injured relationships.

With families/partners I coach clients toward compassionate mindfulness & communication of core values and emotions (ala "NVC") as a base, and I find it very satisfying to witness folks climbing their way out of outdated ways of communicating and finding new depth and satisfaction in their relationships.

I also know that sitting & talking for hours (about feelings!) feels like torture for some, and my experience and creativity bring many alternatives that may include nature/primitive skills, games of skill and chance, drama therapy (it's really a thing, and it's powerful!) and horses (seriously)... Practicing using new tools "experientially" helps new patterns form faster, more durably. This applies to virtually every diagnosis or presenting concern.

I am happy to talk by phone to help you determine if I may be the right counselor/therapist for you. I am well-aware of the un(der)insured crisis and maintain a portion of my hours each week for sliding-scale clients. I can provide documentation for your out-of-network reimbursement if available. I look forward to hearing from you by phone at 503-837-3519 or by email at: Lane@riseup.net
